Craft in order to survive
Installation shown in Plase Bala, Wales
3 m x  80 cm
2005
Work made during a residency at Bala.
Based on a true story, where in  1830 the people of Bala where in need of food.
The farmers wives went around the fields collecting loose wool, spun and knit socks under their shawls. When they had a certain amount they went to Rhuthun selling the socks in return for a bucket of barley, hence the name of work Craft in order to survive. Our waste could feed the world and originally the installation of barley on the table was shown on a white embroidered table cloth with a suggested map of the world on it.  The drawer of table left open full of spoons.
